Three Things that will help you Thrive in a Toxic Work #Environment

Where there are people, issues, and problems will eventually arise, and it is essential to learn how to continue thriving even when the going gets tough. At times the people making the work environment toxic may be acting out of ignorance, and may not mean any ill at all. In some cases, some people out of frustration, or whatever reason they may have decided to make life difficult for others. For example, you walk into a meeting with them, and they perpetually talk down on others and do not value the contributions others make.

It is difficult to describe a toxic environment, but when you are working on one, you will know. When you feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, unappreciated, and cannot wait for Friday to come and anxious when Monday is coming you may be working in a toxic environment.

If this is your situation

  • Decide to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. See yourself as someone who can make a difference. Refuse to yield to the temptation of paying back, by being unappreciative and not greeting or saying hello because others do not. You are different and can make a difference in the lives of others and the environment that you are working in. Make an effort to focus on your reaction and response to whatever others are trying to do to you. Do not forget that the outcome rests in your hands. How others act is entirely out of your control, but how your response is totally up to you.

  • Treat each day as a new day. When you get up in the morning remind yourself, it is a brand new day and a brand unique opportunity for better things to happen. Expect the day to go well and believe that things will go well.

  • Change your job. At times the only thing you can do to survive a toxic work environment is to move to another company. If you have done all and still feel uncomfortable, unwelcomed, and unappreciated, it may just be time for you to move on. It is Ok to change your environment.
